Central Manchester University Hospitals

 

Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) was formed in 1752. It had 12 beds and began in a small house in the city centre.We are now a large teaching hospital for Manchester University's Medical School, and a specialist regional centre for kidney and pancreas transplants, haematology and sickle cell disease. Our Heart Centre is a major provider of cardiac services in the region, specialising in cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology.The Accident & Emergency Department sees around 145,000 patients each year.We are proud at the MRI to boast many medical breakthroughs, the most recent being the first in the UK to carry out urology surgery using a handheld robotic device and fully 3D system. We have also celebrated becoming the first centre to implant 1,000 cochlear implants and carry out 4,000 renal transplants. The Manchester Diabetes Centre was established in April 1988 and was the first of its kind in the UK and our Heart Centre boasts a Rapid Access Blackout clinic, believed to be the first in the world.

University Hospital South Manchester

 

Wythenshawe Hospital is a major acute teaching hospital, recognised as a centre of clinical excellence and providing district general hospital services and specialist tertiary services to our local community. Our fields of specialist expertise - including cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, respiratory conditions, burns and plastics, cancer and breast care services – not only service the people of South Manchester, but help patients from across the North West and beyond. We are recognised in the region and nationally for the quality of our teaching, research and development. We are a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary research and development, and are a founding member of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre. Major research programmes focus on clinical and academic strengths in cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular, wound management and medical education

Royal Preston Hospital

 

Royal Preston Hospital provides a full range of district general hospital services including Emergency Department, critical care, general medicine including elderly care, general surgery, oral and maxillo-facial surgery, ear nose and throat surgery, anaesthetics, children’s services, women’s health and maternity, and several specialist regional services including cancer, neurosurgery and neurology, renal, plastics and burns, rehabilitation, and the major trauma centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The hospital has around 700 beds, operating theatre complex, outpatient suites, and education facilities.

Royal Albert Edward Hospital

 

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is an Acute Trust operating three hospitals and three state of the art outpatient facilities. 
The Thomas Linacre Outpatients Centre in Wigan town centre and the Hanover Diagnostic and Treatment Centre at Leigh Infirmary provide the majority of outpatient services for the Trust.

In addition, the Trust’s ophthalmology and orthoptic services are provided by a dedicated Eye Unit located at Boston House, Wigan Health Centre. 
We also provide additional outpatient services at Leigh Infirmary.

Royal Blackburn Hospital

 

The Royal Blackburn Hospital provides a full range of hospital services to adults and children. This includes general and specialist medical and surgical services along with a full range of diagnostic (e.g. MRI, CT scanning) and support services.

The new Royal Blackburn Hospital opened in July 2006.  In addition to the modern facilities within the first stage of the hospital, the new building includes state of the art in-patient facilities, centralised out-patients department, new operating theatres and Emergency Department.
